Uncle Charlie and Aunt May

Recently, Mother mentioned "Uncle Charlie and Aunt May". I believe it was to mention that Leon had gone to live with them after Grandma and Grandpa Bingham's death. There have been many times in my life that I have heard the names, but I have never understood what our relationship was to them, or much about them.

This last week, I got a DVD from mom. The tile on the disk was "Schofield pictures and histories". I believe this is our Uncle Charlie and Aunt May.

I think that there is a possibility that May was Grandpa Bingham's sister. Mom, is that the case?

There were several pictures on the disk that were simply labeled, "Auntie". I don't know who this is or what her name might be.

Ted at the right I believe to be Ted Bingham.

I believe this is a picture of our Aunt May, our grandpa. Who is Dot?

There is a story about Grandpa, Aunt May, and a flower. Mom, could you please tell us that story?

May was Ted's sister. She was one year older than Ted (Grandpa Bingham). The Aunt Dot was Dorthy. She was Ted's younger sister. She died when she was about eight years old.

Grandpa's parents were Jeremiah Edward Bingham and Ada Zoa Jack. They both died when Grandpa was just a child. Who raised Grandpa and Aunt May?

It is sad that people who should be close to the family and remembered as growing up. Aunt may and Daddy were raised by Aunt Mattie, or at least Aunt May was raised by her and Daddy also lived with Uncle Ab and Aunt Zem. Aunt mattie and Uncle Ab were brothers and sisters. Daddy always was so glad to have a home when he and Mama married. He never felt that he had a real home until he married Mama. He did want to raise his children, because it had been so hard for him as he grew up. That has been hard for me because he felt so strongly that he didn't want his children to go through what he had suffered. Because there was not the connecting parents to hold the two families together, we were never very close to Aunt May's family.

The story told about the flower is this; Aunt Mattie was going away for a little while and she told Aunt May to watch Ted and not let him pull up the flower. When she returned the flower was pulled up. She ask May why she didn't watched Ted and not let him pull up the flower. May said "I pulled it up so Ted couldn't.

Auntie is what Aunt May called Aunt Mattie. Aunt Mattie never had any children of her own. She considered Aunt May and Dad as her own. When she died, she owned a home in California. When the estate was settled, the property was left to Daddy and Aunt May. We went to California in 1938 in a 29 Chevrolet car. That is another story. I think I put it in the book that I wrote about my parents.

You mean Mattie was Martha Era Ann Jack who married Robert Marshall?

Unknown said...

Yes, Aunt Mattie was Martha Era Ann Jack. She was married to a man named Fietz too.

Grandma Bingham Peterson died when Daddy was 9 years old.

How did Grandma Bingham die?

Unknown said...

I'm not sure how Grandma Bingham died. She had married a man named Charles Peterson and lived in Fairview, New Mexico, near Espinola. Some one said she died in a seizure.
For some reason Dad knew very little about his parents. His dad died when he was very small and he was 9 when his mom died. I don't think he lived with his mom after she married Mr. Peterson. There are a lot of blanks in that history. I'm not sure where he lived or with whom before she died.

I thought it was Aunt Esther who married Charles Peterson. So you are saying it was Ada Zoa Jack who married Charlie Peterson.

Who then, was the Aunt Esther who died in the trailerhouse fire in Espanola who was blind?

Yes, Grandma was married to Charles Peterson and Aunt Esther is Their daughter. They had one more child who died.
Yes, Aunt Esther is the one who died in the fire. Doris Faye and I went to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico when we had Elma's car and went to Don and Gloria's wedding in Mesa. She was a very smart lady. She crocheted some doilies and they were a perfect match. A lady at her funeral said that she took her to buy clothes and she could tell the colors of them by feeling them. The colors were just right. She played the organ and planted flowers outside her trailer. That is really the only time I ever spent with Aunt Esther on a one to one basis. I knew her a little bit. When she died, she left each of her nieces and nephews a little bit of money. That is what I used to buy the carpet in the front and dining rooms.

It would be great if this information was collected into an article. Many times people do not go back to the comments that have been there for a while.

I'll take that as an assignment. I'll try to organize it into an article and post it. Give me a few days and remind me if I forget. My right hand is going to be immobilized for a week after Thursday.

One more time, you are my hero.

I agree about composing the history. It would be nice to have a copy for a family heritage book.

When I get home from the reunion, I promise that I will make an effort to get that done.

I have wondered if there is a convenient way to get the contents of the BLOG printed in book form.

Kent said...

If anyone knows of a way, it would be a nice thing to do.

Larry said...

I will look into doing this.

I believe I know how to do this. It will not be free. A book that has a copy of the BLOGs can be created by using a self publishing company like lulu.com. The BLOGs will need to be downloaded and formatted into a PDF file that is adequate for publishing. I am interested.
